MATT JONES

Matt Jones is a ceramic artist living and working in Fayetteville, Arkansas as the current artist in residence at the Walton Art Center’s Nadine Baum Studios. He has worked as a public school educator, board member for NEXT Gallery and the Arvada Ceramic Arts Guild, and most recently, as studio technician and ceramics professor at Louisiana State University. Matt’s ceramic work has been exhibited internationally and held in the collections of the Kirkland Institute of Fine and Decorative Art and the Jingdezhen Vocational School of Art. He is currently researching and creating a body of ceramic works centered around expressions and thoughts of locality, materials, and relationships to the environment.

Statement

My work is an ongoing exploration of people and their relationships to the objects, spaces, and landscapes we live alongside. I enjoy the dialogic capacity ceramic objects and their role within design. I view each vessel, ware, and sculpture as a possibly smaller component within a larger dialogue; words and sentences within a larger paragraph. The fluid manner in which my forms are able to be composed, arranged, and displayed provide a malleable type of syntax, and way of engaging them- the vernacular of the work need not be fixed. I am interested in the stewardship of art and art-objects within the spaces we reside. Beauty and intrigue doesn’t happen by accident, it happens when people preference it.
